So I worked on the main set of teeth today. They are not real metal like the ones on the tongue, so I opted for an Alclad II Chrome finish.
The first step is to sand the teeth with very fine paper (like 3600-12000). This ensures a glass smooth surface. Any bumps or scratches will be amplified by the chrome top coat.
After a satisfactory sanding/polishing, shoot a few light coats of Alclad’s Gloss Black base. From what I’ve read, the gloss black base actually provides the shine as the chrome is really just a clear lacquer with metallic pigments…I could be wrong, though
You will be able to tell if your prep work was good or not at this stage. Note how you can see the reflection of me taking a pic:
Wait 24 hours or overnight before applying the chrome. Here is the final coat with chrome. You can see my reflection in the teeth!
This is actually a collaboration of sorts. Jason aka Creature Core7 laid down all the base work. In order to prevent breakage of the back tubes during shipping, they were not attached prior to painting. I stripped the paint & filled the seams with Aves Apoxie, then repainted the tubes to match the rest of the figure. I also repainted the spinal column.
The colors used for the base coats are:
1) Krylon Almond base coat
2) Delta Burnt Umber wash
3) Delta Black wash
4) Delta Burnt Umber sponge
5) FW Artist Ink Burnt Umber airbrushed to accent/deepen the sponge marks
6) FW Artist Ink Burnt Umber spatter
The cool thing about this kit is the “mini mouth” on the tongue is metal. So, rather than paint it silver or chrome, I simply polished the metal teeth & covered ‘em with a thick gloss varnish!
Colors used were: Freestyle Pale flesh & Tie-in Brown, FW Artist Ink Paynes Gray & Cool Gray, then misted a coat of Liquitex transparent white on top.
After painting, the head had to be connected…and of course the seam had to be fixed. An unexpected effect of the clear acrylic on the dome was that it made it super clear, making the dome lighter in appearance than it was after I initially “smoked” the interior.
The following colors were used for the second layer:
1) Golden Trans. Shading Gray
2) Golden Trans. Raw Umber Hue
3) Freestyle Trans. Blackgreen
4) Future Floor Polish (for the clear dome)
I shot the transparent paints (trans. raw umber hue & blackgreen) around the earlier burnt umber designs. I tried to be as random as possible, not really mottling, but just trying to shoot large splotches around the previous patterns. the last thing I sprayed was a trans shading gray on the areas that were recessed. I allowed the light colors of the base coat on the high points to remain almost untouched to serve as the highlights.
